As always, you can find the episode on our website or your favorite podcast app and I've summarized the review below.
VVVVVV
VVVVVV is a great little platformer built around a single unique mechanic: instead of jumping, you have the ability to switch gravity up and down. This mechanic leads to some of the most inventive and challenging platforming gameplay I've ever encountered. Every single room becomes a platforming puzzle as you try to figure out how to use gravity to move through hostile environments without dying, which you will do often. Luckily, the game wastes no time respawning you at the nearest checkpoint, which are liberally sprinkled throughout the environment. VVVVVV also thankfully leaves lives and game overs out of the equation. The result is a game with a high challenge but that never feels punishing or impossible and moves forward at lightning speed.
Also welcome is the open world game design that makes VVVVVV feel Metroidvania-esque. Different areas of the map have different sorts of obstacles and challenges, allowing you to explore and progress at your own pace.
Another interesting aspect is the game's story, which does not feature a villain or enemies of any kind. The story feels like a small side quest happening in a larger world, which is a refreshing change from a typical platformer where you need to save the world/princess.
It also has one of the best chiptune tracks that you will ever hear and features simple but effective graphics inspired by C64 games.
Overall, VVVVVV is an immensely satisfying experience for anyone up to the challenge and I highly recommend it.
