The Job
We're looking for one to two new mods to join the /r/GameDeals team. Ideal candidates will be long-term members with a significant post history in /r/GameDeals and Meta, and that have a history of helpful and friendly comments. We're looking to fill some periods where there is only one mod available, and take on some extra help during the Summer sale rush from stores.
Mod duties typically include being active in Slack chat, monitoring /new for reposts, managing the report queue, and responding to modmail.
The Requirements
- We use Slack for all communication and this is a requirement for any new mods. Much of what we do is a group effort (writing posts like this one, organizing big sale posts, discussing policy, etc) and real-time connection to one another is essential. You would be required to keep Slack open, even if minimized. This allows us to ping you, ask for a second opinion from anybody available, and keep everybody on the same page. If you've never used Slack before we'll be happy to step you through it. An email address is required to register.
- On average you would need to invest an hour per day into mod duties. Some days are quiet, others are hectic. A situation can develop out of nowhere and require all hands on deck. If you are already busy with work, family, and activities in your real life, this is probably not a job for you.
The Reality
The reality is that modding isn't very glamorous. It's a thankless, unpaid position, and it's probably a lot more work than you are expecting. You'll deal with people breaking the same rules over and over again, and situations where there is no right answer.
Reddit as a whole can be mod-hostile, and something as innocuous as removing a repost might earn you an enemy for life. People may dogpile on you for making an unpopular decision. It comes with the territory, and a thick skin is recommended.
I realize we're not exactly selling the position here, but it's something you need to know before applying. If you can handle that, there's also much to be gained in friendship, experience, and camaraderie.
You're not expected to do this job on your own. We act as a team and reach decisions through consensus. We don't have a hierarchy system in place, and everyone has an equal chance to voice their opinions.
Info we Need
Still interested? You're crazy, but here's what we're looking for in your application:
- GameDeals Activity - Karma isn't a big factor in being chosen, but is a quick way to gauge involvement. Please submit your link and comment karma on /r/GameDeals and /r/GameDealsMeta with your application. This can be found in your user profile, on the top right, by clicking "show karma breakdown by subreddit".
- Skills - Let us know what you bring to the table. We're looking for people that can write announcement posts, offer computer skills (coding, CSS), interact with people (PR, modmail), do research into companies, etc). We take on many roles, and chances are you'll do a little bit of everything.
- Modding Experience - If you have any prior experience modding (any community, not just reddit) then please let us know. It's a plus but not a requirement by any means. We're not looking for power mods that "collect" subreddits, but people who live and breathe /r/GameDeals like we do.
How to Apply
Just fill out this brief Google form! Your responses will be strictly kept private. We take your privacy and ours extremely seriously.
In Closing
GameDeals is a community of over 400,000 people, and it's constantly growing. We're all extremely proud to be a part of it.
If you're still reading this and are interested in joining the team, we hope you'll get in touch soon! If you are not contacted or not selected, please don't feel unappreciated or discouraged. We really appreciate our active users - you are what makes the subreddit great. We especially appreciate every single one of you with the dedication and masochism to apply for a mod position.
We will continue to need new mods as we grow and old mods retire, and you may be selected in the future. Thank you, sincerely, for being a big part of our community, reading this message, and your time, effort, and interest in applying.
